This page explains the income requirements necessary to be eligible to be a patient at NHC. The table shows the maximum annual gross (before taxes and deductions) household income allowed for patients of New Hope to be eligible under our income requirements (300% of the Federal Poverty Level).

To become a patient at New Hope Clinic, you must be:

• A resident of Brunswick County,
• Age 18 or older
• Have Full Medicaid

or

• Unable to afford health insurance and unqualified for Medicare or full Medicaid or Veteran’s Medical Assistance, and
• Have an annual income below 300% of the federal poverty level.

If you think you meet these requirements but still aren’t sure, call or meet with our eligibility department  anyway and they will help you through the process and refer you to other health facilities if you don’t qualify.

Medical Care - Primary medical care is provided by doctors, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners. Appointments and sick visits are available for current patients.

Dental Clinic – The dental clinic is available by appointment only and operates at different times during the week, depending on volunteer provider availability.  The clinic provides exams, dental x-rays, and extractions.  Patient's receiving their primary medical care here may receive limited restorative and hygiene services (fillings and cleanings).

Diabetes Services – Diabetic care is managed by one of our primary care providers or by an endocrinologist. New Hope Clinic patients may also schedule a one-on-one appointment with a Certified Diabetes Educator. Supplies are provided for patients to monitor their blood glucose at home.  New Hope also offers retinopathy screenings for diabetic patients to prevent diabetic-related damage to their vision.

Pharmacy – New Hope Clinic has its own in-house pharmacy that is open on Tuesdays from 12:30-4:30pm and Thursdays from 1:00-6:00pm to provide non-narcotic medications to patients for prescriptions written by NHC providers.  The medications are purchased by NHC from wholesalers, received as donations from Direct Relief and AmeriCares, and ordered for specific patients through Patient Assistance Programs at no cost to them.

The Patient Assistance Program – (PAP) New Hope Clinic assists patients in ordering prescription medications not available at the NHC pharmacy.  The prescriptions are either sent directly to the patient, picked up at an outside pharmacy with a voucher, or sent to the clinic where the patient can pick them up.

Specialty Clinics – Services vary based on volunteer availability and are available by appointment on site or by referral through Cape Fear HealthNet for local doctors or at other healthcare facilities across the state when not available locally. Not all services are available for free and if there is a cost, the patient is responsible for paying it.

Vision Screenings – Basic vision screenings are available to see if corrective lenses are needed.  This service is offered at the Clinic the first Tuesday of each month by the Southport Lion’s Club.

Insurance Marketplace Navigation – New Hope Clinic provides an office for Health Insurance Marketplace Navigators from NC Legal Aid.  These navigators help people find out what insurance options as well as what insurance subsidies are available to them.

Care Management Assistance – Topics include how we make food choices, how we can avoid mindless eating, how to navigate a grocery store, how to read nutrition labels, being active & fit, and more. These one-on-one appointments with a care manager are open to all New Hope Clinic patients who are interested and motivated to make changes to promote healthier living and better understanding of their medical conditions and medications.

All onsite services for uninsured patients, including medical and dental care, prescription medications, diagnostic testing, and health education, are provided at no cost to the patient. Patients with income below 150% of FPL are asked to make a suggested contribution of $4 per visit; patients with income between 150% and 200% of FPL are asked to make a $10 suggested contribution per visit, and patients with income between 200% and 300% of FPL are asked to make a $20 suggested contribution per visit, but services will never be denied due to inability to contribute.

Patients with Medicaid will be asked to make co-pays as required by their insurance plan.
